About the program
This course is approved by NCBAHM in the AOM-BIO category for 4 credits (PDA-9513-1). In many jurisdictions, nutrition is within the scope of practice of acupuncturists. Patients will come in asking western-related nutrition questions, and with complaints where western nutrition etiologies and pathologies play a role. As a trusted member of the patient’s health care team, it is our responsibility to give patients evidence-informed advice, to the best of our knowledge, and refer out when needed. This course provides acupuncturists with information on western nutrition that is relevant to clinical practice, to help guide patients towards achieving their health goals. It includes general nutrition trends, hot topics, debates, relevant lab interpretations and recommendations for patients, common diseases and dietary recommendations, popular trends as seen on IG/TikTok, etc., resources for patients and practitioners, and when to refer. Course goals and objectives: - Gain a deeper understanding of and ability to evaluate evidence-informed western nutrition topics as it relates to common patient complaints, questions, popular trends, and resources. - Have confidence in answering patient questions related to western nutrition and saying you don’t know. - Apply knowledge to guide patients on current and popular nutrition trends, and where to find trusted resources. - Have the ability to facilitate discussions on nutrition-related lab-work or further lab-work recommendations. - Confidently know when to refer a patient to a Registered Dietitian.
