What is Dermarolling?

Also known as collagen induction therapy, dermarolling is the use of a small hand-held tool, which is covered in tiny needles, and rolled on the face to create micropunctures in the skin. It is a gentle facial rejuvenation procedure that can be done at home (vs. microneedling, which needs to be done by a professional in an office setting).

What are the benefits?

Dermarolling has several benefits and is known to not only boost the production of collagen and elastin by the skin, but can also help skin care products to be absorbed more effectively and efficiently.

In studies that were done following dermarolling, it was shown to be as effective as ablative treatments in stimulating the production of collagen and elastin. Biopsies taken post dermarolling showed a 206%+ increase in collagen and elastin fiber production.

It is effective at reducing wrinkles, cellulite, stretch marks, tightening loose skin, decreasing scars from acne, and may stimulate the scalp in cases of Alopecia to regrow hair.

Additionally, it can be done at home using the Aculift™ Dermaroller available in our store! There are many different dermarollers on the market, at many different price points. The benefits of the Aculift™ Dermarollers are that they are of superb quality, contain a high amount of needles (540 for the facial dermaroller!), and while the needles are stainless steel they are dipped in titanium to increase their quality and decrease the risk of allergic reaction.

Who should not do it?

Dermarolling is relatively safe, however it should be avoided in the following cases:

  • problems with bruising

  • recent microdermabrasion

  • severe acne

  • recent Botox injections

  • recent fillers

  • facial herpes

  • open sore, active breakouts, or open wounds on the skin

  • raised scars (it can be used gently on sunken scars)

  • inflamed or irritated skin

Generally speaking, if you suffer form any skin related disorder or condition, please consult your doctor before use. If you develop any skin sensitivity following use, consult your skin care specialist. Avoid sharing the dermaroller with other people and keep our of the reach of children.

How often do I need treatment?

Ideally when you first begin dermarolling, you should use it once every few days, until your skin gets used to the treatment. Then go to once every other day, and finally you can use it once a day when your skin is used to it and to achieve your goals.

How do I do it effectively?

Follow the below tips to use a dermaroller effectively:

  • Ensure your face is clean

  • Roll over your forehead, cheeks, and chin

  • Use gentle pressure until your skin gets more used to the needles, your skin should NEVER bleed from dermarolling

  • Never use it within the orbital rim (that is the bone that surrounds your eye), in other words, keep it away from your eyes

  • When done, use soap & water to clean it, let it air dry, and store it back in its case

  • Once per week, use a sanitizing tab to sanitize the dermaroller

  • Replace the dermaroller once every 8-12 weeks

Are there any post-treatment care instructions?

Not necessarily, except to keep your dermaroller clean and sanitized. Following dermarolling, use whatever serum you have, allow that to dry, and then apply your face cream of choice.

As always, check in with your dermatologist or doctor to get any additional recommendations and keep them up to date with your skin care regimen.
